A 20 minute walk along the coast from Quoyayre is Quoyness Chambered Cairn from neolithic times.

Numerous sandy beaches like Catasand with its sand dunes, Doun Helzie with sand stone arches and small caves, Whitemill Bay, etc, all have seabirds to spot and perfect for beach combing. Designated walks with flora and fauna to find are advertised in a leaflet and some have sign posts.

Start Point lighthouse with vertical stripes is situated on a tidal island so tide tables need to be checked.

Buildings from World War 2 can still be seen along with remains of A German Destroyer at Lopness Bay

2014 saw a Burnt Mound being excavated at Meur then rebuilt next to The Heritage Centre in Lady Village and close by The Croft, a small croft house which takes you back in time when you step inside.

The Island Ranger holds planned events and trips during the year, including walks to beaches, cliffs, rock pooling, beach combing, bird watching, whale watching, etc watch out for local adverts or check Sanday website.

There are 3 lochs on the Island for trout fishing which are stocked regularly.

A well maintained 9 hole golf course with very reasonable rates is available anytime.

There is a 15 metre swimming pool at the Community School with sessions through every week and all run by volunteer keyholders and lifeguards.

 A playpark and an adventure playground are in the school grounds and during summer the Community Association run a playscheme in the Community Room & Hall so plenty for younger visitors to do whatever the weather.

Across the road is Heilsa Fjold which has free wi-fi and cafe facilities on various days and drop in sessions for the youth on Saturdays.

We have 2 hotels with public bars in Kettletoft which do sit in meals and other eateries and take aways throughout the Island. We have 2 fully stocked shops and 2 Post Offices. See local notices for opening times.
